Scientists Are Rethinking Moon's Origin After Discovery Of Surprise Algona

Published date: June 27, 2024
  • Location: Algona, Iowa, United States

Scientists examining the lunar soil brought by China's Chang'e-5 mission have found graphene for the first time. Graphene is a form of pure carbon and is considered the building block of other carbon-based materials, including graphite.

Until now, it was believed that there is no naturally occuring carbon on the Moon. The discovery is also challenging the commonly accepted theory of the Moon's origin - the impact of Earth with another planetary object.
