This blog post records some thoughts on how to architect a real-time collaborative app when you do have a central server.
It is on the speculative side, since my own experience centers on server-optional collaborative apps using CRDTs. Nonetheless, I hope that this post can provide a useful overview of different architectures, while also giving perspective on where classic CRDT/OT approaches are useful and where they might be overkill.
The architectural techniques below come from a variety of collaborative apps and devtools, summarized in the Classification Table at the end. Additionally, the following sources serve as theoretical inspiration:
