What Is MOQ in Cosmetics? A Simple Guide for First-Time Brand Owners Crafers

If you've been researching cosmetic manufacturing in India, you've almost certainly encountered the term "MOQ." It appears in every conversation with manufacturers, every product inquiry form, and every wholesale catalog. But what does it actually mean — and how does it affect your brand?
What Does MOQ Stand for?
MOQ stands for Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest number of units a manufacturer is willing to produce in a single production run.
For example, if a manufacturer says their MOQ for face serum is 500 units, they will not produce fewer than 500 bottles of that serum in one order. You can order 500, 1,000, or 5,000 — but not 200.
Why Do Manufacturers Have MOQs?
MOQs exist for practical business reasons:
Setup costs: Every production run involves machine setup, cleaning, calibration, and documentation — regardless of batch size. These fixed costs must be spread over enough units to make production economically viable.
Raw material minimums: Ingredient suppliers also have their own MOQs. Manufacturers must order raw materials in bulk, which requires a minimum production volume to use economically.
Quality consistency: Smaller batches can be harder to produce consistently. A minimum batch size helps maintain formula stability and quality control standards.
Profitability: Below a certain batch size, the production cost per unit becomes too high for either party — the manufacturer cannot price it attractively and the brand cannot sell profitably.
